Legend has it that the Fountain of Youth right in the heart of the Brocéliande Forest, holds the key to eternal youth…

How to stay young forever…

The Fontaine de Jouvencein the Brocéliande Forest, is close to a small quarry where walkers traditionally mark their visit by adding a stone to one of the many piles (unless this is the work of Breton pixies !). So if you’d like to live forever, follow me ! By drinking some water from the fountain, adding a few secret ingredients and carrying out special rituals, you can stay eternally youthful !

I’m afraid I don’t know the secret recipe, so we can’t try out this experiment today !

Grow one year younger…

The Fontaine de Jouvence (fountain of youth) is so called because in days gone by, newborn babies were baptised there on Midsummer’s Day (21st June). However, if for any reason, a baby couldn’t be baptised that year, it was brought the following year for baptism by the high priests, so in fact it gained an extra year of life ! Hence the legend that we can grow one year younger by bathing in the waters of the fountain – not something to be sniffed at !

To mark my visit to Brocéliande Forest, I’ve added a stone to one of the piles already there.

In my next blog posting, I’ll tell you all about daily life on board Le Renard, a Saint-Malo cutter which was the last ship owned by the famous Corsair, Surcouf.

See you !

At the heart of the Brocéliande Forest stands a dolmen which, according to legend, is said to be the tomb of Merlin the wizard.

Imprisoned by Viviane

I met up with Mathieu, a specialist in Arthurian legends, in the Brocéliande Forest in front of the dolmen known as « Merlin’s Tomb ». Mathieu told me that the site symbolised the unwavering love between Viviane the Fairy and Merlin the Wizard : Viviane kept Merlin a permanent prisoner, after he had revealed his secrets to her and in particular the spell which binds a man to a woman forever !

Viviane imprisoned Merlin within nine circles of air which are symbolised by a stone circle on the ground. If you tap the ground with your foot, it sounds hollow, so it’s possible that Merlin may be just below our feet.

Make a wish and leave a gift

It is traditional to make a wish and leave a small gift for Merlin on the rock to thank him for granting your wish – just a small object, something you’ve made yourself or picked up in the forest. Of course, you mustn’t tell anyone what you’ve wished…

The site was ransacked regularly in the past by people who believed that there was buried treasure underneath the dolmen. The revival of interest in local legends means that the site now commands the respect it deserves … and Merlin can rest in peace !

My next blog posting will be behind the scenes in a Crêperie in Saint-Malo.

See you !

La Roche aux Fées at Essé, one of the largest dolmens in France, is a truly magical place.

I meet a fairy !

Today, I got up really early to visit a monument that is about 5000 years old : the Roche aux Fées (literally, Fairies’ Rock), one of the largest gallery graves in France, which receives more than 50 000 visitors every year.

While I was watching a beautiful sunrise, Béatrice the Fairy appeared! She told me that one night fairies carried the stones here in their aprons from the Theil Forest, several kilometres away (just a few footsteps for fairies!). Only the three entrance stones to the gallery are sculpted.

Watch my video on La Roche aux Fées :

A magical site

The fairies meet twice a year : the 21st June and 21st December, the shortest day of the year, when the sun rises directly in line with the Roche aux Fées.

According to legend, if you try to count the stones, you never get the same answer, because the cheeky fairies move the stones while you’re walking around them ! After several attempts, I came up with the answer 39, but in fact there are 41 ! I think I must have been bewitched by the magical site !

My next blog posting is all about my memorable visit to the Malouinière de la Villebague at Saint-Coulomb, with its one thousand and one piece dinner service !

See you!

Today I’ve decided to visit the ‘Valley of no return’ (Val sans retour) in the Brocéliande Forest in the company of Mathieu, who lives nearby and knows a lot about the legends surrounding this mythical place.

Such cruel fairies !

At the entrance to the Val sans retour, Mathieu and I find ourselves beside a pool known as the « Miroir aux Fées » (Fairies’ Mirror). Mathieu tells me that it is said that it was once the home of seven fairies who used to only come out at night to observe the stars and do magic. However, the youngest, and least experienced, fairy was very curious by nature and regularly ventured out of the pool during the day. In doing so she met and fell in love with a knight, which made her sisters very jealous and also fearful that their younger sibling would reveal all their secrets. So they killed the knight and imprisoned their sister who, in desperation took her revenge by cutting the throats of her six sisters. She took a love potion to regain the knight’s love and after bringing him back to life, she went off to live with him, leaving her sisters to bleed to death in agony, which is why the pool is red. So be careful when making friends with fairies !

Unfaithful lovers beware !

In the Valley of no return, Mathieu tells me that it is said that Morgane the Fairy used to live here. Her lover Guyomar was unfaithful to her, so she cast a spell over the valley so that any unsuspecting, unfaithful men who went there could not leave again and were destined to spend the rest of their lives in this place populated by monsters.

Only a knight with a pure heart could break the spell ! And so it was that Sir Lancelot, desperately in love with Queen Guinevere lifted the spell and successfully rescued all the men imprisoned in the valley.

For once, a story with a happy ending for the ‘baddies’ !

My mouth is watering already at the thought of my next blog spot – the Marché des Lices Market in Rennes …

See you !

Mysteries of Brocéliande

Brocéliande … everyone knows the names associated with the Forest : the quest for the Holy Grail, the adventures of Merlin and Morgan the Fairy, korrigans (Breton pixies), elves and fairies, but do you know where the mysterious places are and how to find them? Here’s an easy discovery trail for your first visit.

As you probably know, the Brocéliande Forest is a rather big place and the different sites connected with Arthurian legends are quite far from one another; you can follow the trail on foot but it takes 5 days at least for experienced walkers. To start with, the best thing is to take your car and drive from place to place following the ‘Brocéliande Tourist Trail’.

…through the forest

First of all, get the leaflet about the Trail from one of the Brocéliande tourist offices. You need a day to be able to visit all the places on the trail. Choose a starting point, e.g. Plélan–le-Grand, and follow the road signs indicating the ‘Circuit Touristique de Brocéliande’.

l'épée Excalibur dans le rocher

Can you pull Excalibur out of the stone ?

So here we go with the list of places to visit : Paimpont in the heart of the Forest, the Valley of no return (le Val sans retour) – home of Morgane the Fairy, the Fontaine de Barenton – the spring where  Merlin and Viviane used to meet, the Château de Comper where Sir Lancelot grew up, Merlin’s Tomb and the rejuvenating Fontaine de Jouvence (fountain of youth), Boutavent and the remains of its anceient medieval fortress, the Chambre au Loup and its many legends, the historic medieval town of Montfort-sur-Meu … I think that’s enough for your first visit to Brocéliande ! Why not end the day on a terrace overlooking the ‘Lac de Trémelin (lake)’ and see if you can pull Excalibur out of the rock. You never know, you may be the next King Arthur!

Some more suggestions

The first list of places is quite long and you might not have time to do everything in one day. However, Brocéliande Forest is a place to come back to over and over again either on your own or on one of the many Guided walks in Brocéliande Forest which are organized all-year-round in which you can listen to stories as you walk…
