There are Breizh Cafés offering an innovative, alternative way with crêpes in Tokyo, Paris and Cancale,! You may be lucky enough to meet Bertrand Larcher, who created the concept, who will be delighted to tell you all about Breizh Café. An unforgettable taste experience in convivial surroundings by the sea!

Breizh Cafe in Cancale

Sheer delight ! Delicious, crisp, golden galettes generously filled with fresh and sometimes organic ingredients. As an appetiser, I recommend crisp mini crêpes with seaweed butter by Jean-Yves Bordier. Amazing! And for the main course, try one of the ‘galettes du jour’ (specials) – the originality and sophistication of the products will astound you.

Why not stay the night…

The Breizh Café in Cancale has superb ‘chambres d’hôtes’ (B&B), overlooking the sea! The lovely, spacious rooms are decorated in minimalist chic, perfect for a relaxing stay.

Your hosts will no doubt offer you one last tasting opportunity – mini crêpes filled with chocolate orange mousse. Absolutely knock-out !

The 4000m² Zoo de la Bourbansais at Pleugueneuc, is a must for all nature lovers, both adults and children, when visiting Upper Brittany. It is also a great place for amateur photographers to take some brilliant shots of animals that you don’t see every day, and those with a good zoom feature on their cameras can do animal portraits and close-up shots.

On arrival at the Park, you can follow a suggested itinerary. A range of different events are programmed throughout the day including giraffes’ tea-time (photos on show in my flickr album), pelicans, capuchins, squirrel monkeys, parrots, meerkats, a display by a pack of about fifty hunting dogs, storks in flight and a falconry show.

From a photographic point of view, compose your shot carefully, pointing in the same direction as the animal is looking, using a wide-angle lens to include its habitat (if possible without its ‘house’ in the background to give a more natural effect). Catch shots of animals in groups, the different aspects of their nature (playful, aggressive, friendly, etc.) and their day-to-day life.

If your camera has a black-and-white facility, this is great for highlighting the character and presence of an animal. For example, the different shades of colour on a lion’s coat can be captured more vividly in black-and-white, by emphasising the contrasting shades. Have a go – I’m sure you’ll be impressed with the result!

A rather strange game…

This time last year perhaps you may have taken part in the competition called  « Encerclés par les requins (surrounded by sharks) ». The idea was simple and amusing, all you had to do was invite your internet friends to come into a virtual aquarium surrounded by sharks. Once you had filled the aquarium, you qualified for a prize draw.

Breakfast time with sharks

Breakfast time with sharks

The prize was rather an original one : a night surrounded by sharks, at the Grand Aquarium in Saint-Malo, for 10 people. The lucky winner, Hélène R. kindly wrote to us about her stay in Upper Brittany and agreed to us posting a few extracts here

9 happy tourists

« First of all, a big thank you for the warm welcome we received »

It’s true that you feel like a real VIP when you arrive at the Aquarium at 8pm, all the lights are out, the visitors have left and there’s just the night security guard and your personal guide ! Just imagine what it’s like to be alone with your guide in the dark corridors where the only light comes from the aquariums highlighting the beautiful fish and plants

« This amazingly original idea is one that deserves to be repeated. »

Unusual and unique in France, the Grand Aquarium de Saint-Malo is the only aquarium which offers tourists the chance to spend the night there while the sharks swim all around…The next morning, the sharks are fed while breakfast is served to the visitors in front of the tank. Imagine eating breakfast while a few feet away sharks and turtles are gracefully swimming around, performing a sequence of ballet movements…

« Nine of us went to visit the sharks on 29th August 2009. We took the opportunity to visit your area, (the walled town of Saint-Malo and other places). Thank you so much for giving us this wonderful opportunity. »

Thank you to Hélène R. for telling us about spending the night surrounded by sharks !
