Exploring Rennes (3/3) : les Champs Libres

Today I’ve decided to visit les Champs Libres and, in particular, the Library and the Planetarium, which are located in the Espace des Sciences.

A cultural and leisure centre

Since 2006, Rennes has been the proud owner of a new cultural and leisure centre : Les Champs Libres. The building itself is of an impressive modern design with three different sections housing a Library (La Bibliothèque), a Museum (La Musée de Bretagne) and a Science Centre (L’Espace des Sciences). So there is plenty to do and discover !

The Library and its spectacular view

The Library has a very original shape and is on many levels. If it’s your first visit, I recommend you do as I did and go to the top floor. First of all admire the view of Rennes and then have a wander through the shelves and see what catches your eye. You can learn a lot here as this level is devoted to books about Brittany and its heritage.

Legends of the heavens

Come down from the library and head for the Planetarium. There are several themes to choose from, so I decided to learn more about « legends of the heavens ». The Planetarium is huge with very comfortable seats. The programme started with a map of the sky that night and then showed how it would look in several millions of years from now. Then the part about legends began and I found myself totally immersed in the stars, how the legends were born and their links with the constellations and so I settled down to savour every moment of the stories.

It was very difficult to leave my oh so comfy chair…my head was still in the stars !
